Growing up in Ontario Canada, brothers Kyle and Jon Wall were both involved in various hardcore punk and metal bands, genres which rarely overlap with contemplative electronica.
Their collaborative project propulse is an unexpected hybrid, as DIY values and aggressive creativity are let loose on the core elements of IDM and jungle. The result fits into the world of explorative electronica, but forgoes the wandering approach many artists take. Instead propulse echoes the resolute nature of punk and metal, directing complex synth-led rhythms with intent. IDM is often tuned to perfection, and propulse balances that meticulous detail with harsher, grittier moments. Like ripped silk, frictionless luxury is given an edge.
propulse has produced a growing discography through the Ontario label 'A Person Disguised As People'. They've featured at the electronic culture festival Mutek Montreal, joining previous performers including Honey Dijon and Detroit techno pioneer Jeff Mills. Audiences also caught their live set at the Frequencies show in Guelph in late 2024.
The video above features visuals from Berlin-based Singaporean visual artist Reza Hasni, and teases the upcoming release of their first full length LP.
